The American Cocker Spaniel is a descendant of the English Cocker Spaniel which came to the United States from England at the end of the nineteenth century. A standard type was laid down by the American Kennel Club (AKC) in 1943 and recognised as a race in its own right by the English Kennel Club (KC) in 1946.
The American Cocker Spaniel is the smallest of the hunting dogs. It is compact and robust and has a nobly formed head, all in all a well balanced dog, of ideal size, able to run at considerable speed for long periods. The standard fits the temperament of the American Cocker: well disposed, kind, never aggressive, lively, fearless, consistent, in short an uncomplicated and bright spaniel.
